The New York Times called Thomas Smith a "veteran programmer." For over a decade, Smith has led Gado Images, an AI-driven visual content company.

AI isn’t just for creating machine-generated images. Companies like Synthesia provide simple systems to create AI-generated videos for applications like localized news reporting and corporate training.

I’ve personally tested Synthesia’s products, and they work very well. They even do silly things like creating an AI-generated Santa Claus around the holidays.

Here, Victor Riparbelli of Synthesia discusses his company’s tech and shares some details on what it can do, at the 2021 Digital Media Licensing conference. You can subscribe to the DMLA YouTube channel for more great video clips like this one. (I’m a DMLA board member and volunteer.)

Video Summary

This summary has been condensed and edited for clarity.

At Synthesia, we develop and operate the world’s largest platform for AI video generation. We help our customers create awesome video content without the need for cameras, microphones, actors, studios, and all of those other things you’d otherwise associate with recording and video production.

We’re able to do this by transforming the video production process from a physical process (where we run around with physical sensors capturing things that happen in the real world) into a 100% software-driven process.

This enables us to do everything much faster and easier, but it also opens up a whole world of new possibilities for what we can do with video content. For example, we can create thousands of videos in just a few seconds, we can make them interactive, and we can do a lot of things we probably haven’t even thought of yet.

This is the paradigm shift that really excites us over the next 10 years. Today, our platform is very simple to use. You can start creating videos for as little as $30 per month.

We have a bunch of templates you can start from, and a library of avatars (both off-the-shelf and custom) that you can use to create your videos. To create a video, you simply jump into the video creation part of the app and start composing your slides (just like you would in Keynote or PowerPoint).

You can add animations, objects, images, background videos, screen recordings, or anything else you need. Once you’re happy with your video, you click generate and wait 2-4 minutes for your video to be created.

We’re seeing a lot of people using our platform to create videos for customer or employee onboarding, product demos, training and education, marketing and advertising, and a whole host of other use cases. And we’re just getting started – we think there’s a lot of potential for synthetic media to change the way we interact with the internet, and we’re excited to see what the next 10 years brings.
